Being Charlie

Freedom of expression.  Freedom of religion.  Ethnic tolerance, respect and the belief in our inherent rights as human beings.  These are some of the ideas that have helped forge our present condition as civilized human beings.

The worst kind of slavery is that which can occur inside each of us, inside our hearts and our minds, driven by the innate cruelty of fear and the politics of those who shield themselves behind and aura of  so called respectable goals in order to commit the most hideous crimes and atrocities.

If we allow fear to control us, to dictate what we can say and do and think or be, we then relinquish part of our humanity to the hands of a new and unacceptable kind of slavery that cuts far and deep within.

Even though this blog is about fashion and lifestyle in the virtual world of Second Life, as the daughter of a Broadcaster and Journalist who made it a point to teach me the value of freedom of expression and the right to information, I just can´t post today without mentioning the attacks in Paris.

This attack goes straight not only to the very core of our French values and heart, but it goes straight to us all irregardless of nationality, religious affiliation or gender.

Freedom of expression is one of the fundamental values upon which our capacity for peaceful coexistence and mutual tolerance is based on and tested upon. Without it we cease to function as thinking individuals to become mere automats and puppets of the powers that ¨whim.¨  It is a value worth fighting for with its very own weapons … The mind, the heart, the pencil and the courage to be.

Even though I have and appreciate dark humor, unless directly attacked,  I tend to be very respectful and mindful of people´s feelings and beliefs. For this reason I was not particularly fond of Charlie Hebdo´s style, but in spite of my personal views and like a fellow Frenchman once said …

“I do not agree with what you have to say, but I’ll defend to the death your right to say it”. Voltaire.

When born, we are in essence all the same. Where we are raised and by who, changes our view of life and it’s value, inherent rights as well as our view of fellow humans.

Whether it is a result of Gitchi Manitou, God, Allah or the guy next door, we can be blessed that the majority of humans abhor the radical actions of the minority and will overcome them.
